The formation of this volcano began about 35,000 years ago. Explosions, eruptions and lava flows have been a volcanic cone first, then from about 20,000 years followed periods of paroxysmal explosions of the most tragic was the one of 79 AD when entire cities, among wich Pompeii and Herculaneum, where destroyed. And the last eruption, filmed by allied troops, was in 1944. since then the volcano has been dormant. This last eruption have causing the deaths of only 55 people, thank to an evacuation warming issued days before.
The volcano is the site of the “vesuvian observatory” the oldest scientific institution dedicated to the study of volcanoes, and was founded in 1841. this old bourbon building hosts a permanent exhibition for a fascinating journey into the world of volcanoes.
